Sometimes…You Get What You Need

We went on our third annual Greeley Moonlight Bikeride last night.  We had been noticing that our blog and our lives seem to repeat themselves in a loop.  Not that this is bad, we actually have nice lives and enjoy what we do, it just isn’t as fun as a new adventure might be.   Regardless we took our bikes to the Police department and met all the other bikers.  We noticed that the light on Cassie’s bike had stopped working….Well, that’s ok.  There will be a large group of people with lights, so it won’t make too much of a difference.

At the PD

The police pick a route thru town, and this year the ride was much more ‘flat’ in elevation change than last year’s.   This was nice because last year’s ride was killer.  I think they must have received some feedback on that.  We aren’t a group of hardcore bikers, and it’s just a community ride.

Well we actually ended up riding right by our house, then by the dog park.  We went all around the west side of town.

Enroute, with Cops Blocking the Way!

When we got back from the ride, we ate sandwiches and had drinks.  They also announced the winners of the raffle.   We WON A NEW LIGHT for Cassie’s bike!  The guy next to me also won, but he won some socks.  He and his wife/girlfriend told us that they were just talking about needing socks too.   The universe is strange like that.

The Universe Gave Us a Taillight!

How to Harvest Flax Seed

We put down a mixture of dryland wildflower seeds when we re-did our front yard flower garden area. We saw quite a variety of wildflowers the first year, but this year, there has been one clear dominator: flax. It is very pretty when it is in bloom; little periwinkle flowers steal the show. They are super-hardy and don’t need much water at all to survive. We see them growing wild around here in Colorado all the time.

When the  knock-out flower show is done, they turn into little ball seed pods and we noticed they were littering the flax seeds all over our driveway.

Flax Flowers in Bloom

This is what a flax plant looks like when its seeds are ready to be harvested

The small flax seeds reside in this tiny little pod

So we decided that instead of letting them all fall, that we would harvest a few of them. First, pick a plant that is ready to drop its seeds. Then cut it down with scissors or a knife (it’s a tough plant). Next, shake it vigorously over a sheet or some other type of drop cloth. (A towel would work, but it might get the little seeds stuck in the terry cloth material.) Check out this video for a demonstration:

Once you have all the seeds and other things shaken out of the bunch, pour it into a bowl. Then use a sifter or a colander to separate out the seeds from the leaves and pods that also shook into the mix.

Flax seeds after sifting -with a few other things still, but pretty good

Flax seed is very high in Omega-3 fatty acids which is great for your heart and brain. Some studies have shown flax seed helps prevent and/or treat cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. It’s also a great food in general and can be added to everything from cereal and bread to chili and meatloaf. Additionally, it’s a great additive to your chicken’s food to help increase the omega-3’s in your chicken’s eggs.

I gave the chickens a few to try and saved the rest for us

Fun at Settler’s Park and Pearl Street Boulder

We had a great 4th of July holiday. We just stayed home and ran some errands. Then about 8 o’clock some friends called and asked if they could watch the fireworks from our porch where we have a great view of the Greeley Stampede’s show. We said sure!

They had a couchsurfer from southern France staying with them who spoke, in order of language skill, French, Spanish and English. I speak those languages, in this order: English, Spanish and French (and je connais seulement un peu de français, although I would love to know it better). So I hung out with the Frenchman speaking  Spanish as we watched America’s Indepence Day explosions with friends -lol. It was pretty cool.

Britton and I took off the rest of the week to make a long weekend. Our friend Damon came into town to visit and stay at our house. So, we asked if he wanted to do anything special and we all thought it would be nice to go into Boulder for lunch, a twirl around Pearl Street and a hike in nearby Settler’s Park.

At lunch with water misters since it was so hot!

The kids loved the fountain in this heat!

It was still really hazy out from all the fires -Looking out onto Pearl Street and Boulder down below

We even saw a deer!

And on a final high note, we drove home in a rain storm that Colorado has been desperately praying for. It was a great day!

Pedicure Pampering in Greeley

While Britton and the boys were out golfing…we were getting pampered with pedicures!

Getting pedicures

What a life. Britton’s out swinging the clubs and I am hanging out with my girlfriends getting my feet massaged, my toe nails painted and drinking mimosas.

With Kelly and Gina at the spa

My good friend Kelly is getting married next weekend, so we did these fun, lavish activities as part of the festivities to celebrate. It took almost as long to get all of our pedicures as it did for Britton to play 18 holes! But it was a fun time.

In the summer I mostly walk around barefoot or in flip-flops and don’t worry too much about putting on polish or anything, so it was definitely a treat.
