Of Birthdays Past

Yesterday was Britton’s birthday. But it was also my dad’s. And my aunt’s! A lot of people were born on 1-23 apparently. We almost always would go out with whomever wanted to come out for Britton and my dad’s shared birthday. Usually we’d go to Farmer’s Inn, the local restaurant that has been in La Salle forever. I say forever, but it’s been around since before I was born because my parent’s brought me there on the way home from the hospital!

Happy Birthday Boys with Balloons

We go there because it’s good, inexpensive Mexican food, but also because they give you a free meal on your birthday. And with both Britton and my dad having the same birthday it was, as my dad would put it, a helluva a deal. Plus it gave us an excuse to get everyone all together. And sometimes at Farmer’s, they’d even give them each a balloon.

At Farmer’s with Britton’s family too

So, this year was hard. Quieter. Not as cheery as birthdays past. Britton and I went to Farmer’s with my mom for lunch on Saturday for Britton’s birthday since they are closed on Sunday, but it wasn’t the same without Dad.  It’s these moments that still make it so difficult to realize he’s really gone. No more shared meals at Farmer’s.  No more shared birthday cake. No more shared memories with him.

And, you know, Britton never acted jealous or resentful to share his birthday with Dad or vice versa. They both got along so well and were happy to be able to spend their birthdays together. There was no place they’d rather be.

Last night I was having a hard time reckoning with myself the fact that those days are gone. Life’s  just a little flatter without my dad. A little less vibrant. Just missing that little lively something that only Dad could bring.

I hope Britton and my aunt Laura had a lovely time on their birthdays. And on what would have been my dad’s 63rd birthday, I hope he knows I was thinking of him too.

The Purge Surge

Britton and I have been going systematically through our house trying to purge ourselves of everything that is unnecessary. I’ve found a huge amount of junk that I have no idea why we have kept all these years except maybe that they were our favorites or useful at one point: T-shirts with holes in them, shoes that are falling apart, old bills and papers. I’ve also found some things that are harder to let go like my porcelain doll collection from when I was a kid (that I haven’t looked at in about 8 years!) or some of our furniture (like “Schnoodle’s” couch -we call it that because it is so worn out it is embarrassing to have humans use it but Schnoodle doesn’t mind). But progress and thoughts of Puerto Rico keep the purge surging.

Just one of many bags of old ripped clothes

Each weekend we pick an area or two to focus on. And we’re almost done. We’ve gone through the spare bedroom upstairs. We’ve gone through our bathrooms’ (all three) shelves and cabinets (and threw out a huge pile of old nail polishes and expired vitamins!).  We went through the coat closet and under the kitchen sink. We’ve sorted through the kitchen drawers (a couple of times, because things seem to just get drawn there). We’ve gone through all the Christmas stuff in the basement and under the stairs. We cleaned out the garage. Under the bed. In the cars. It’s amazing how much junk accumulates and all the dust and grime that settles there.

These shoes have got to go!

We’ve thrown out about 8 black hefty bags of stuff that was just pushed to the corners in our house. Stuff that used to be a part of our lives, but now we’ve grown out of so it needs to be thrown out. Other stuff  will be either sold on Craigslist, Ebay or at a garage sale or given to a thrift store.  The standard for keeping something is pretty high. We have to use it fairly often. We have to like it. It has to be in good shape. Or it has to have very high sentimentality. Basically, there has to be a real purpose to it. Otherwise, out!

Still have a ways to go, but at least we can see the floor unlike before!

I have a theory that everything that we do or that happens to us externally is a reflection of our inner world for better or for worse. Really, everything around us is a reflection of us. We created this! So I think that not only are we purging out our junk but also some of the drama in our lives. The drama that builds up in the corners of our minds. Those certain weird vibes that reside in certain people and things. The drama that serves no real purpose but for some odd reason we have a hard time letting go.

All this junk can leave our house, and also our mind.  We will see much more clearly and feel so much better. To me, I have high standards for my home. It’s not that it is the cleanest in the world, but it’s also not a mess. It has a lot of open space for possibilities to come in. But I also want to be selective of what comes into my life. I want to make sure it creates the best chance for success. Your home could be seen as a reflection of your mind. Is it cluttered or neat? Creative or boring? A sanctuary of positivity or a dark den of despair? It’s up to you to create boundaries and kick out the junk when it no longer serves its purpose. Control of your mind…and sometimes even your home can be tough, but you have to stick to your rules and periodically purge. And when all’s said and done, it feels good to get it out!

Life Prefers Warmer Temperatures

I read thru a political forum from time to time.  I find it interesting for a number of reasons and it gives me an opportunity and a reason to try and educate myself on a number of things.  Just recently someone posted an article about prosperty and global temperatures.   The premise is pretty basic.  When it is warm out life grows more readily there is more food and more wine consumed!  When it is cold food is scarce, wars break out and societies collapse.

The article doesn’t attempt to explain the reasons for the warming and cooling and it really isn’t the point.

I thought it was relevant because we are trying to move from a climate that has extreme swings in temperature thru the seasons to one that is much more steady.  In the summer in Colorado it can get up to 110F degrees and in the winter it can get to -20F.   I’ve started to notice that with those swings I also experience a change.  In the summer things are growing, I have more energy and am generally way more productive.  In the winter things die, I have less energy and it’s more difficult to try and be productive.

I would think that not experiencing the extreme changes in seasons and temp would keep humans (and all life for that matter) just a bit more on the productive and energetic side.  It will be interesting to see what my own experience is like living closer to the equator.

January Fun in Greeley

We’ve been having some fun times so far this January. For New Year’s Eve we went over to our friends Matt and Jamie’s house and played the Xbox Kinect which is the newest virtual reality game similar to the Wii that is very active. We were sweating and laughing and in general enjoying ourselves, especially as we played against a three-year old with boundless energy.

Britton and Matt playing Kinect on New Year’s

We stayed up until midnight and watched the re-run of the countdown and ball dropping in New York (since we are two hours earlier here in Colorado) and toasted to the new year.

Earlier that day we took our niece, nephew and my cousin Tommy who was in town out to lunch as part of their Christmas present. We decided to go to Pho Duy which is a new Vietnamese beef broth soup place in Greeley. Britton and I love going there so we thought we would show the kids. Plus, it was really snowy and cold, a perfect day for soup!

Then this weekend we were invited to a re-wrap your crap party, AKA white elephant party at my friend Kelly’s house. We love these parties and have even had one at our house! After Christmas you always find stuff you really don’t need anymore or that is just plain silly so it’s a great way to have fun with the excesses.

Party

We ended up with a tea timer -for people who can’t remember to take their tea bag out of their cup! lol And another glass chicken/rooster. I am starting to amass quite a lot of weird chicken paraphernalia thanks to my love of our real chickens I suppose.
