Finishing the Foundation (and Some Fun)

This week went by pretty fast because we had all of our days filled up. The guys worked four days out of five finishing up the columns -building the molds, mixing concrete, etc- and the one day that they didn’t, Britton and I spent about 10 hours shoveling and then carrying buckets of rocks up and down the quebrada like the sorcerer’s apprentice in Fantasia. We were joking that this is by far the best exercise regimen you could come up with! Cardio, strength training and repetition. We were super sore (especially my shoulders), but the next day was more work.

Britton and I literally moved tons of rocks to this site

They mixed all the concrete and then had to load it into buckets and into a wheelbarrow. One person “drove” the wheelbarrow and the other one or two acted as the horses and in that way they hauled the super heavy wet concrete to the columns.

The hard work wasn’t over at the site either. At this point they had to lift each super heavy bucket of liquid concrete mix in the air where it was then lifted by the guy on the ladder and then dumped into each column form.

By the time the weekend came, we were ready for a break from the work. This weekend is the annual Corona Pro Surf competition and like the one we went to last year, it brought quite the crowd into Rincón. On Saturday night we went out to the bar Calypso because a great reggae band called the Predator Dub Assassins was playing and we had a blast.

We used to listen to them some when we were preparing for our move here to get psyched up, so it was cool to see them in person. Plus one of our friends was playing in the band with them!

This video was filmed here in Rincón

And finally, today we enjoyed a beautiful beach day down at the marina with friends.

Lots of work, and lots of play, too.

Getting Ready to Go to Puerto Rico!

Well we are within a week of our departure. We are getting everything taken care of that we need to so we can be gone for a few weeks in Puerto Rico!

We need to pack for swimming, caving, house closing, hanging out, hiking our 4 acres, going out to restaurants, repairing / fixing the house, rain, sun and of course the unknown of which there are many in Puerto Rico.

We need to make sure our animals are taken care of. In preparation for this we got a mega feeder and a mega waterer for the chickens (all 6 now).

5 gallons of water                                                15lbs of feed

We figure that should make it easier for us to take care of them all the time, and pretty easy for someone to chicken sit while we are away (hey, free eggs! Thanks Charlotte).

We’ve been listening to more reggae lately, I guess it’s part of the whole tropical theme..lol.  I am not much for reggaeton scene yet, but some of it I do like.  We also really enjoy old salsa music (oye Hector!).

It’s coming up quick! In less than one week, we’ll be in Puerto Rico ready to close on our house!

Poudre River Mishawaka Reggae Music Festival

After our exciting hiking and biking, we went down the road to Mishawaka for their 5th Annual Reggae Music Festival.  We had never been to a concert there but had driven by enough times to know that it is a hippie hang out and we were interested in finding out what it was like. From the road it doesn’t look like much, but there are always a lot of motorcycles and cars pulled off to the side. When we walked in, it was apparent why it is such a cool and popular hang out. The stage is about 5 feet from the Poudre River!

They have an outside seating area where you can have food and drink, or you can stand right in front of the band. A lot of people were playing hacky-sack and dancing to the different reggae bands. There were a lot of people with dreadlocks and Jamaican colored outfits.

We also saw quite a few river rafters floating down who would pull off to the side of the river to sit, watch and listen to the bands before floating away. It was a neat experience. Even though Mishawaka is a much smaller venue, I’d have to rank it up there with Red Rocks in terms of the cool factor.
