Winding Down and Winding Up to the Season

img_4401
The Sahara dust that the wind carries with storms over the ocean limits visibility and creates hazy days, but also spectacular sunsets and sunrises

Here in Rincón we are now in the midst of the transition to “season.” Season, as people here call it, is the tourist season. Surf’s up and it’s cold up north, so many North Americans and others come to Rincón and Puerto Rico in general during the winter.

But right now, early October, we are in the transition. A few people are trickling in, but overall the roads are still nice and unclogged, the beaches are empty and the days are slow and lazy. Britton and I have acclimated to the temperature (by NOT using air conditioning and losing some weight) and need little more than a fan and a nice cold beverage to stay comfortable.

It’s just as beautiful as ever. Because we really have nothing to gain by the season we have never really cared one way or another, but this year we are looking forward to it a little more because our band has been practicing all summer for it and also because our cabin should be finished soon and we can rent out our little cabana that we’ve been living in.

Checking out some costuming ideas too! Halloween is the official start of season and a lot of fun in Rincón! How do you like this look?

Or how about this one in a pink wig?

When we’re not working on the cabin or jamming with the band, we’ve been enjoying our days just as always.

And there’s still always some new and weird thing to see! Yes, this car has horns! Literal horns.

It’s a time of preparation and also relaxation. Enjoying the calm before the storm. When the tourists and part-timers (seasonal people) come everything becomes more electric and exciting, the humidity drops a bit and the days become crystalline, but it also means that the stores run out of certain things, prices tend to get a little crazy, the roads are more dangerous and people can unwittingly (or wittingly) be a little annoying and arrogant. Still, I happily accept this seasonal change over the snow, wind, gloomy dark and cold any day though.

Birds of a Feather

Not too much to update. Life has been good. We are still playing music with the band and progressing on the cabin. We’ve also been hanging out and having a good time. We are fortunate to spend time with such a varied group of people we call our friends.

Friends, Farming, and Fun

We had a pretty busy weekend. We went out to lunch to see  some friends who were visiting from Tuscon, AZ. We went to a good Creole food restaurant in Longmont called Lucille’s Creole.

Later that afternoon we painted the new house and then went home to a beautiful sunset. Here’s a picture we took from our backyard.

We have been letting the chicks stay outside lately. We were worried how the big chicken would react to them, but so far it has been peaceful. We had to play musical chicks for a while to allow the big chicken time in the coop to lay her egg. I knew we wouldn’t be able to do that today because of work so we just thought we’d wait and see what happened. Well, I went out to check on them and she had laid an egg! Seems to be working so far.

Integration of the old chicken and the new pullets is not going quite so smoothly. The chicken has found a way into the greenhouse even when we shut the door (through the secret cat tunnel), so she hasn’t been sleeping with the pullets. When they are playing/pecking around in the yard, the big chicken does her thing and the little girls do theirs. I think eventually they will form a flock. I hope so! I hope Big Chicken AKA Salt is not left out!

Here’s a few pictures from around the yard today. Plus our first small “farm” harvest!

The First Harvest -the strawberries and lettuce are just coming in. The mint and eggs are ongoing and plentiful.

LaShaun’s Birthday Party

We went out Saturday night to one of Britton’s co-worker’s house for her birthday party in Frederick. We hung out, ate and talked for awhile. Then we played Texas hold ’em for fun, and then they played one for money, but we forgot to bring cash so we sat that one out. In the for-fun one, Britton was out of the tournament right away; I made it to high-stakes, but didn’t have many chips left and got kicked out on the blinds.

Then I tried out the Wii for awhile. I think the game is called Wii Fit. I did balance games and step aerobics. Some of them were pretty lame (think: going up and down on a plastic board to a basic rhythm beat for 10 minutes), but some were cute like the boxing and bubble burst one. Overall, it was a pretty laid back and nice evening.
