Three Kings Day, or Día de Reyes (officially Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos). January 6. In Catholicism, the day the Magi arrived in Bethlehem with gifts for the Christ Child. Puerto Rican children leave a shoebox with grass clippings under their bed for the camels to eat, and the three kings in turn leave a present for the child. In the first half of the 20th century, this is the way kids got presents at Christmas. Then came Santa Claus, so now they double dip! In Puerto Rico the holidays (las navidades) start on Thanksgiving week and end about a week after Three King’s Day. If you want to get any business done in Puerto Rico (especially government business), you are basically SOL between those dates, because it’s party time for everyone! — Fran
