Season and Party Greetings 2016

Whew! We are in the midst of the Christmas party season here in Puerto Rico! It has been so much fun! We hope all of you are enjoying the holidays as well!

We have been going out to parties and events almost every single night for the past 2 weeks!

A fun ugly sweater/white elephant party with our great friends the Kersch’s- a little hard to find sweaters in the tropics though!

When we’re not out partying, we’re still slowly and steadily moving over to the cabin and spending time enjoying the beautiful tropical winter.

Masquerade Ball and Rincón Halloween 2016

Halloween in Rincón means the start of season and the buzz is electric.

This year Halloween day fell on a Monday which would probably usually mean a pretty mellow Halloween. But not in Rincón! Here it meant a 5 day marathon. Rincón takes on Halloween the way the rest of Puerto Rico does Christmas. The festivities are intense! The first parties started on Thursday because of Art Walk and continued on until Monday.

Mysterious masquerade ball

Our band decided to have a masquerade ball at beautiful Villa Orleans featuring some of our new songs that we’ve worked on all summer. We figured that masks are an easy, elegant and fun way to celebrate without using your Halloween costume. The party was great. The location was amazing. Our music rocked and people were dancing next to crashing waves. It was magical.

Hypnotic flames!

After that late night we were pretty worn out and didn’t go out to the Friday or Saturday parties around town. Saturday was probably the busiest of the days with parties at The Beach House, Calypso, El Bohio and of course the big one at Tamboo. We did however recuperate our energy enough to go out on Halloween evening. We weren’t sure how it would be since it was a little rainy, but sure enough the party was in swing!

Party animals!

The Shipwreck party is always so much fun. People are just plain silly. There’s a DJ playing dance music while people get sweaty dancing on the white gravel. The bar is right down from the marina so the party spills out into the street and down to the beach. The best thing is that the costumes can get downright crazy!

The night ended at the relative early hour of midnight since it was a Monday. The police came and peacefully broke the party up. We talked with the friendly police for a while and I said, “Me gusta su disfraz” and he replied, “¡Pero no es un disfraz!” And we both laughed! Claro que no…jaja.

Another great kick off to the season!

I Love the Nightlife

And I like to boogie.

Since moving here we have had the best night life. Britton and I enjoyed going out at night in Colorado too, but generally we only did that in the summer because nighttime in the winters of Colorado was just sooo cold that it was much smarter to stay inside and watch a movie.

One of our new Spanish surf tunes: Surfeando

So Britton and I have a pretty active nightlife nowadays. A lot of time is spent with our band either practicing or playing shows out. But we also hang out with other friends too. We enjoy going to the “gringo” bars like Calypso or Pool Bar when we have friends visiting but we also like going out to some more traditional Boricua bars.

Mmmm sushi! At Pool Bar

The other night I went to a fun book club event in Mayaguez and then Britton and I met up with a friend at a bar to listen and dance to live merengue and bachata music and play a little pool.

We saw the cutest old guy dancing alone, so I just had to go up and dance with him and tell him how much I love that he dances. ¡Hay que disfrutar! Dancing just feels so good!

¡Wepa!

This guy was so much fun!

We also enjoy Art Walk on Thursday nights and other events around town. However, sometimes we have to reign in our nights because when we get home at 2 or 3 in the morning, we basically have to completely write off the next day. But these nights are where memories are made!

A magically fun night that ended at the ritzy, charming Horned Dorset of all places! (Thanks Logan and Karin!)

Day Trip to Patillas

We took a day trip up to Patillas to visit our friends Richard and Mary Jane.

Pineapple fields

It was quite a drive from Rincón to Patillas, but so beautiful to watch the landscapes change. Once we go around the southwestern corner to the Caribbean side, the waters turn majestically turquoise blue, the plant life is much different and drier and it seems to be quite a bit windier than what we experience at our place.

Lake Patillas

We drove past large Lake Patillas and into his finca. It is very private and secluded up a long steep road.

When we arrived the party was in full swing. People were eating fish soup and drinking beer in anticipation of the main event: lechón, but of course!

Dominoes
Enjoying one of Puerto Rico’s pasttimes: dominoes!

We enjoyed our time and even saw our east coast friends Fran and Steve!

But the biggest hit of all was when someone showed up to the party with parrots. Even Richard didn’t know who this person was, but it was pretty cool to see and hold his birds. One of them caused a kerfuffle when he would crawl onto our shoulders, get tangled in our hair and then scream into our ears. So funny.

Fun with a parrot
A hit with kids and adults alike! Green Amazon parrot

¡Hola!

It was a beautiful day. Richard said it had been raining hard every day prior so we really lucked out with a sunny warm afternoon party. We are so grateful for these magical moments in paradise.
