On Our Way to a Life in Rincón

The gate to the property, if you look straight above the agent’s head you’ll see the ocean!!

Well, things are moving right along. We are on our way to living in Rincón, Puerto Rico -or at least we’re at the first step of buying a house there. Here’s a list of things we’ve done so far to buy this place:

  1. We have received the final signed contact by all parties.
  2. They’ve deposited our escrow/earnest money.
  3. We’ve contacted and started the inital work with our lawyer (a friend of the Kruses, thanks for the recommendation guys)!
  4. We’ve received approval for our time off of work (two weeks, end of May).
  5. We are pulling our money together from various accounts.

Things we still need to do:

  1. Book a flight to BQN-Aguadilla. Britton says we will never again fly into San Juan if our final destination is the west coast of Puerto Rico!
  2. Get started on the lawyer stuff -title registry look up, writing up the deed of sale, etc. Our lawyer says we can wait another month or so to make sure nothing ties up the property (like a lien) between now and the sales date
  3. Cancel the Isabela deal
  4. Pick the closing date
  5. Reserve a rental car
  6. Confirm where we’ll stay when we get there before we close
  7. Get the cashier’s check for remaining balance
  8. Get a blow-up mattress to sleep on when we first stay the night there! 🙂
  9. Prepare for the adventure of our lives!

So very HAPPY for you both!!!!! I am so excited for you…just like if it was when Frank and I made the decision and when we saw our dreams become a reality…trust me we still pinching each other when we go to our house…can’t believe that we can have a life here in Jersey and in Rincon. Can’t wait until the day we just run into each other at the post office or Econo or Sam’s Club and most definitely at homedepot!

You are always welcome here. If you can rent a truck instead of a car you’ll be able to buy a bed/mattress, refrigerator etc. and get them to your house. If I’m not doing anything I can help with our truck. The previous owner of our house (Hamilton) was nice enough to help Jeff pick up a bed since it was late in the day after closing and he didn’t know where to go and had rented a car. Try to arrange the closing for a Monday so if there are screw ups you have T-F to work on them and don’t use all your vacation up merging into the next week! You can fly in and stay here Saturday or Sunday so you are psuedo rested for the ordeal! Exciting!

Check off another item. We’ve bought our airplane tickets! 🙂

Thanks Katrina, that would be nice to be well-rested before the big event! We’ll look into a truck, but I’m not sure how much were going to do right away. I think an air mattress will work and maybe we’ll get a mini-fridge. I don’t even know if the electricity is turned on there or not since the owners have been away for so long!

So exciting! We leave CA for PR tomorrow night, arrive Tuesday to our “new” home in Humacao. We are renting a minivan for the drive from the airport (10-12 suitcases, since our household stuff will take another 2-3 weeks to arrive), then trade it in for a smallish car while we wait for Steve’s POS SUV arrives. (We need a beater there.) I sold my car, so will be car shopping, and so much else to do, which involves waiting in line and waiting for people to do house projects. Steve is in for culture shock, and even I, since it has been over 30 years since I lived there. Actually, I more than he will need to adjust, since I’m far more of a perfectionist! As long as he has reliable internet (for his job) and a sailboat, he’ll be happy! An adventure awaits us all! Good luck, guys. Your new property looks beautiful! — Fran

Cassie- If you think you may become permanent residents (live here more than 1/2 the year and file taxes here) then you want to turn on power and water right away. Turning those things on establishes that you are here. When CRIM screwed up our property taxes (it is a different amount if you don’t live in it permanently) we had to show when we established power and water service to show we lived here. Turning it on can only work in your favor! The minimum power bill is $8 and water I think is around 10.

Fran and Steve – When you are ready for a cat let me know…Blanco has turned out to be wonderful but when we sell the house and move we have a lot of cats! There are some that are too untrusting for others to take so I feel like they are my responsibility. Blanco would warm up to you. I can hold him and go right up to him and he’ll lean on me but he is still aloof with Jeff since he doesn’t see much of him! Exciting stuff! Get rid of the perfectionist thing RIGHT NOW! PR has been good for me in that way…I think I’m a little less crazy here despite more things to make you crazy!

Cassie – When Frank and I had the water and electric turned on, we used a lady in Rincon that does this kind of thing as her business, she will go and stand in line and even chase the truck down if she sees them and had them follow her to our place. We did not have the time to waste in Aguadilla plus she knows people…since she has been doing this for awhile…so many times they say they are coming and never show up. Let me know if you decide or when it comes time and you see you need someone that is around the area I can have frank check his documents for her name.
