A Liberal Catholic Confirmation

Mom and Bishop
My Mom and the Bishop who looks like Santa Claus

Both of my parents have recently retired and it has left them with a bit more time to do the things they always wanted to do. My dad who is fighting/healing from cancer enjoys playing online poker, fixing up the back area of their house, watching TV and movies and has recently started to write a really interesting sci-fi story! My mom spends time with her dogs, gardens, and this past year has taken an interest in going to church. Actually, I think she started thinking about going back to church around the time we first went to Puerto Rico and stayed with Awilda. I think she still has the Bible Awilda gave her.

My family has never been overtly religious, but I think like all people, we are seekers of some sort. My mom, having grown up in the Catholic church as a child has taken a while but has returned to her roots even if in a sort of non-traditional way. She attends a Liberal Catholic church. I did not know what that was until she invited me to attend. I am always up for attending religious events, at least once, if even only for the anthropologist in me.  Apparently, the Liberal Catholic church has nothing to do with the political liberal, as in liberal and conservatives, except in that the definition of “liberal” means:

a.  Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded

Liberal Catholism was separated from the Roman Catholic Church and has a wide range of views including reincarnation. It is somewhat similar to the Episcopal church in its reasoning for breaking from the larger church and in its allowances (like the fact that priests can marry). What is interesting is that they still retain a lot of the regalia of the old Catholic Church and use traditional  clothing, incense, candles and face the alter. Some of the hymns were from the 1800s! Not as old as the ones we sang at the synagogue, but old none-the-less.

Anyway, this is the church that my mom has been attending with my grandma and her neighbor Cletus, who she spends a lot of time with and so she decided to get confirmed. She invited Britton and me to come (along with my brother, his girlfriend and my dad). There was a lot of up and down sit, stand, kneeling, and of course the part that I find the strangest: communion. It is still hard for me to “swallow” (pun intended) the whole eating of a human God, but I know it is a meaningful part of many Christian religions.

It was a special day for her and so she wanted me to put a few pictures up on this blog.  It was fun hanging out with everyone, getting dressed up and taking pictures, wedding style.

How to Make a Diaper Cake

This weekend one of our friends had a baby shower. I decided to make a diaper cake. What is a diaper cake? Well, it is definitely not edible, but it looks like a cake, only made out of diapers! I had made one a few years ago, but wanted to do it again. This is how we made it:

First, find out if the mom-to-be will be using cloth or disposable diapers. If the new family will be using cloth diapers, you can use them as well as receiving blankets, burp cloths, wash clothes etc. If they are using disposable diapers like my friend said she will be using, then get about 40-60 diapers (fewer if using larger sized diapers). At least they get another usage as a gift before heading out to the landfill 🙁

Second step is to take these diapers out and individually wrap them with a rubber band. If you are really talented, or have a lot of help to hold things together you needn’t do this, but it helps to keep things manageable.

Diapers
Package of diapers and individually tied diaper

Next, you bunch these together to form the base of the “cake” as shown below:

Lots of diapers
Many diapers together as base

The outside diapers are not wrapped into little coils, they are out to make a circular area. Then wrap a large rubber band around the whole outside area to hold it together.

Next wrap this area with tissue paper. Make sure the bottom is covered (we made the mistake of not wrapping the bottom and a few individual diapers fell out later).

Make as many layers to the cake as you want (I’d say 3-4), getting progressively smaller each layer. Tie each layer on the outside with a bow. And keep the whole thing together with ribbon going vertically.

And finally, attach small gifts all over the cake.

Britton helped me a little, but it really wasn’t too hard to put together. I put this all together with about 30 minutes of time (having all the materials on hand). It’s a fun and unique gift that I thought I’d share with you all.

Snow Dog

Our dog Schnoodle loves to nose around in the snow. She has kind of clumpy hair and so she always brings in lots of snow which in short order turns to water. The weather in Colorado changed yesterday from warm to rainy, to windy and now, to being snowy. Really snowy. I’m glad I don’t have to drive far today. Maybe we’ll even get a snow day tomorrow! Here’s hoping!

This video looks kind of old with all the specks (snow) in the “reel”; the chickens are somewhat visible in the greenhouse

Sick -and Tired- of H1N1

No, I’m not actually ill from H1N1 -AKA Swine Flu, but I am figuratively sick and tired of it. Ever since my normal job in health education was cut due to statewide budget cuts, I have been working in Emergency Preparedness, specifically in H1N1. At first I didn’t mind too much, and actually I find the whole process kind of interesting, but lately I feel like I am going to burst with so much work! I am in charge of supplies (both vaccine and ancillary supplies -from consent forms to cotton balls), I have to write a situation report daily, I still try to squeeze in a few translations, and I am the volunteer coordinator. Not only that but I am trying to figure out this whole incident command structure. Agh!

H1N1 vaccine

I am sure after this initial push, things will calm down and it will run much more smoothly. I just hope things simmer down sooner than later. All these meetings, missing lunch (yesterday all I had for lunch was a cookie!) and putting out “fires” may very well make me literally sick and tired.

On the plus side, I thought of another use for eggs: vaccine! 🙂
