Cheap Tix to Cheap Trick

Every year here in Greeley (at least for the last 80 or so) we have a July 4th celebration put on by the Stampede.  It used to be a community “potato festival” as that is what was grown in this area..Potatoes.

Somewhere along the line a private company took over ownership of the fair.  Since then it’s turned into a bigger and bigger deal.  They run the parade every year, the rodeo and the island grove park carnival.   One of the benefits to this is they draw in some pretty big names in music. They’ve had Def Leopard, Kid Rock, Keith Urban and numerous other acts.

Last night we had tickets to Cheap Trick and rode our bikes to the fairgrounds.  Blue Oyster Cult opened up for them.  I think we were the only people that rode our bikes.  The people watching the gate kind of laughed as we rode past them and bypassed the $10 parking fees.

Ticket Stubs

The fair has increasingly gotten more and more expensive.  I’d imagine back in the days of the Potato Fair it was pretty cheap to walk to the park.  They’d have some games and maybe a baking contest.  Now it’s $10 to park your car and another $5 just to get into the park.  A Turkey leg will cost you $8 and a lemonade $4.  That makes the regularly priced tickets to see Cheap Trick($17) not so bad in comparison.   We got them for $5 which is usually the cost to just walk around.  Not bad!

At the show! You can see the meat packing plant in the distance

The concert was pretty good.  We recognized a few of their songs from the radio and there were a few people that seemed to know every song.  I am sure this was a pretty big deal for them.

We got an “Indian Taco” (that isn’t really a taco and isn’t Indian either) as we walked around the food court.  We ran into a few people that we know and then watched the concert.  Overall it was a fun night .

I Love Summertime!

Summertime in Colorado is the best. It is warm, everyone is outside enjoying the weather, and the days are much longer. There are bbq’s and get togethers, concerts, bike riding, gardening. Everything is green and flowering. The chickens are laying lots of eggs. Everything is alive! It reminds me a lot of how Puerto Rico is every day.

We eat lots of fresh food like strawberries and lettuce from the garden

We go to concerts: Britton in downtown Greeley at the Blues Jam

We ride our bikes everywhere

Chickens give us lots of food: Henrietta on an egg

Hooray for summer!

Tropical Fruit and Other Finds Around Rincon

Mango snack on the roof under the huge mango tree

One of the fun parts of walking around our property is looking for tropical fruit trees. Since we are noobs (new) at everything tropical, we aren’t sure what all is out there. I’ve been able to identify citrus trees because they have spikes on the branches and the leaves smell really good when you crush them. I can also identify coconut palms and anything that already has fruit on it. So far, this is what we’ve been able to find on our property:

Starfruit (Carambola)
Avocado -a few trees
Citrus -I think lime and orange, but not certain
Coconut -Water coconut
Breadfruit
Mango -Huge mango trees

Cracked Coconut

I hope there are more, but if not, I’m sure we’ll be planting some in the future. I’ve heard banana trees and papayas grow really quickly.

We met up with Annie and Justin from Rincon Vacations at the Rum Shack/Lazy Parrot. It’s a fun place and they let locals swim in the pool if you buy a drink or something to eat. It’s nice to know there is a pool we can use if we don’t want to go to the ocean and get all sandy/salty.

We also walked around the Rincon Plaza last night and saw a big deal going on at the Catholic Church. I think it was a first communion because a lot of kids were wearing white and were all dressed up taking pictures. Then we went to Tres Puertas which is an art gallery/studio. They were having a poetry reading and had some local kids playing the flute too. We’re having a lot of fun exploring everything from our very own backyard to all the cool things going on in Rincon. It’s been nice being here this long because we can really imagine living here! It’s great!

Mom’s Day

This weekend Sunday was  Mother’s Day so Britton and I decided to take both of our moms out to lunch. We went to our favorite restaurant, Bisetti’s in Fort Collins. We had a great meal and then took a little walk around downtown Fort Collins afterward. It was nice to take a moment to appreciate our mamas. Without our parents, none of this could have been possible. Thank you, we love you!
