The Hunt for El Saltillo

On the Hunt for El Saltillo we found this gem!

Waterfall chasing has become one of our new favorite hobbies. Especially on hot, humid summer days, the clean river water is so much more refreshing than salty sea water, hot sand and blaring sun on the beach. I still love the beach, but the best beach days are in the winter when it is less crowded and slightly cooler water. We had heard of a new waterfall to check out called “El Saltillo” in San Sebastian and attempted to find it the other day.

Britton and Aeden in the river

Since we go to the San Sebastian pulguero almost every Friday now, we decided that would be the best day to go on the hunt. Our car broke down as we were eating lunch afterwards at El Meson, but thankfully El Meson in San Sebastian is right next to Pep Boys and Britton managed to put on new wheel bearings even as it began to rain. Then we were off. We weren’t sure how much exploring we would do given that it was raining, but we thought we could at least scope out the area.

Turn at this corner near “El Castillo” Hotel

We found the little road that would lead us closest to the river access point. We gathered a few supplies from a local watering hole and parked at a pull-off next to a strange little dump/hang out site (an overturned washing machine and a makeshift bamboo hut).

Where we parked. Was this a hangout spot??

From there on, what little we found about the waterfall said we would have to walk through the river to find it. That isn’t new to us, and is a common way of approaching falls. It’s easier to go barefoot so we parked and changed into our swimsuits and kicked off our shoes. While we were changing we saw an older man in the river. He was changing his clothes too, so we gave him a moment. Then he emerged and began talking to Britton in a mix of Spanish and English. He told Britton that he knew the area well and that the “Big One” (El Saltillo) was much further down, but that if walk a little further down the road we would find another beautiful waterfall. It was like the part in the video game where the character gives you just enough clues to help you find the treasure.

Britton talking with the man as steam rose from the asphalt and clouds settled into the jungle

So we all headed in the direction he recommended. We figured at this late point in the afternoon we wouldn’t be up for a huge hike to find El Saltillo anyway, so we were blown away when we saw this secondary waterfall with no name.

Absolutely incredible! Like a movie set!

What a gorgeous fall! Soft and mossy steps and so much plant life!

I don’t even think this other one has an official name, but it was just so perfect!

Aeden’s point of view (our little cyclone head haha)

Fun at the falls

The only drawback to this fall, was that there wasn’t much of a pond for swimming and we heard that El Saltillo has a nice pool beneath the cascading water. So if this little beauty was the warm-up, I can’t wait to see the “Big One.” The hunt is on! Stay tuned to see if we find it in the weeks to come.

Birthday Fun and other Updates

We have been enjoying the island even more since we returned from our trip to Colorado. Nothing like a trip off the rock to help you appreciate our tropical island home even more.

For my birthday this year we stopped by one of my favorite resorts: Villa Montana in Isabela/Aguadilla. I like how it is tucked away and not too “posh” that we can drive in with our truck or old Mustang and not feel like a hillbilly as we did at Royal Isabela. There was hardly anyone there and so we had one of the pools to ourselves and Aeden just loved it. We ordered a pizza and walked along the beach. It was a very chill time, especially considering how hot it’s been!

With Aeden down the beach

On the drive to Isabela we stopped at this windy coconut farm

And at a coconut tree!

The beach is so interesting to a baby!

We have been enjoying our trips to the Pulgueros around the island -these are delicious mangosteens

Our friend John Grady died recently and we went to his memorial at the Rincon Marina

Orchids in bloom -I am starting to get into orchids more around the property!

And we continue to expand the trails to the gardens

Fun at Steps Beach (Aeden got sand EVERYWHERE!)

Our little sidekick won’t be in our arms for long- he is raring to go walk!

Quick stop at Hacienda La Fe in San Sebastian and old coffee/sugar plantation turned museum/park

At La Fe’s kids’ park Aeden got a ride in a swing

Fun scenes around the island and with friend Daisy

Lots and lots of mowing this time of year!

And bugs! Yes, this greeted me in the shower! haha Life in the jungle!

Even loves bananas and swinging!

Here’s Aeden’s update video. He has really grown a lot!

Pena Blanca, Rincon Marina, Dome’s Wings and More

Fun times with the boy

My how time flies differently with a kid! We have been having fun trying to go out to various beaches especially now that it is the hot summertime. We have been to Pena Blanca before (a long while ago), but we took a little dip. I would like to bring the snorkel gear as I have heard it’s pretty nice. We went down the stairs and tucked ourselves in under the cave as the swallow birds flew about. Aeden loves, loves the water. I can’t wait to teach him to swim.

The water is so crystal blue and clear!

Recently painted and cool cave area

Family time!

I love this little stairway area. It’s a bit hard to trek especially with people coming from both directions

We also have spent a little time at the Rincon Marina. I call the Marina the “social beach” of Rincon because there is always something going on. Boats comically entering the water (sometimes hitched to a car), the newest gadgets are tried out (motor surfboards, jet skis, water jet packs, etc), there is people watching galore. But now that the “season” is over, it has been a nice, tranquil place to hang out on a weekday or celebrate a birthday.

Happy birthday, Amanda!

Doing things with a baby does make life a little more complicated, but it can be done haha

And with his daddy

Another blissful moment at the Marina

Don’t worry, I didn’t toss him that high

This kid has such a fun life already!

Flamboyans are back!

My little love and I shared a swing ride at Dome’s Beach

This art installment was made by a local woman named Luisa Acevedo. I love it!

We’ve enjoyed going to the San Sebastian Pulguero most Fridays-with friends Bronia and Andrew

There’s no feeling quite like having a cranky kid trust you so much he falls asleep literally in your arms (it also feels quite heavy to walk like this very far haha)

No wonder he sleeps so well!

Mother’s Day, TARS, and our Tropical Gardens

Overlook spot in Moca

A quick update. We have been tackling house repairs and building of the deck railings, keeping up with the cabana (recently painted the entire interior again) staying on track with all the mowing (we maintain about 2 acres of green areas) as well as planting and watering the tropical gardens when it’s dry. When we are not at the farm, we go out for drives or on searches for more plants as well as just normal chores like grocery shopping and things like that. We have also had the opportunity to spend some time with friends which is always nice.

The farm always feels so refreshed after we mow it, it’s like our own personal park

It would be a rare occasion at a plant store that I don’t find something to buy

Quick stop at Borinquen Beach in Aguadilla

Aeden loved it!

We also went to TARS in Mayaguez. It has been a long time since we’ve visited. Now that we’ve been doing this tropical gardening for a good long while I can appreciate the collection that they have there even more. It looked to have suffered some damage from the hurricane, but overall it is still quite impressive. So inspiring to see what’s possible here. So many home gardens are plain and this is extraordinary!

Newest additions to the farm -2 tortoises (I think sulcata but not sure)!

Amazing number of torch gingers to take to the farmer’s market lately

Celebrated my very first mother’s day as a mother. Here’s the mother who made me, and who made me a mother (around the same age 8-9 months)

Everyone loves Aeden, everywhere we go. His hair is so “llamativo” and many people want to hold our smiley coloraito/ cano

Doing a photoshoot with friend Laura. Going to miss her so much! We always have fun together. And I have loved being her muse!

Tree-mendous!

Going away party for Laura and Kara

Receiving party (Hawaiian themed) for someone who got out of hospital with our neighbors

A normal day in Rincon -cows crossing the road and mangos falling from the sky

What a beautiful life!
