Broody? Or Just an Angry Chicken?

We are not really sure what is up with Omelette our white Leghorn chicken. She is really old, hardly lays eggs anymore and has recently started to just sit in the nesting area all day long, even at night when she usually would sit on the stick. When we go to get the eggs of the other chickens, she is sitting on them. She doesn’t seem to know or care that there is no rooster around to fertilize them.

Omelette giving me the evil eye

Unlike the other chickens, she won’t let us put our hand underneath her and grab the eggs. She has tried to peck us and fluffs up really big to defend her post. When I finally scare her off the nest she squawks like no other. We are not sure what to do. Do old chickens decide they want to go broody? Or is she just getting old and demented?

We would like to get some new chicks to replace her, but I don’t think we could catch her without her screaming her head off. She’s always been a little skittish ever since we got her. Any recommendations or ideas?

Fun at Pump it Up!

Since Britton and I don’t have kids, we don’t know what all the latest toys, fads and fun that kids have these days. But a lot of our friends do have kids, so when we were invited to Pump it Up in Fort Collins for my friend Lisa’s 4 year-old son’s birthday we had no idea what to expect. Around here we see a lot of people rent out inflatable jumping castles for their front or backyard for kids’ parties. But Pump It Up had two full rooms of bouncy areas!

In the boxing room

We weren’t sure if this was a kids’ only fun thing, but they told us everyone could do it. We had to go find socks however and then the fun commenced. We raced, climbed, fell on our faces, boxed with huge gloves, and bounced around for about an hour.I felt like I was practicing for Wipe Out!

Sandi, Lisa and Me in the King Chair

After the birthday party we all decided to go to the Rio in Fort Collins. It was great to catch up with my best friends Sandi and Lisa and their families. I’ve known them since I was about 12 years old! After that Britton and I decided to take advantage of the fact that we don’t have kids and spontaneously go see the movie Limitless. It was pretty good! Overall a great day to feel like a kid again.

Where to Buy Baby Chicks in Greeley area

We have been asked a few times where to buy baby chicks in the Greeley and Northern Colorado area. This is the list that we know of so far. I’ll add to it as I find others. If you see a place that is a feed store, a ranch supply store, or a mercantile of some sort, it might be good to stop in. Most of the time you can only find baby chicks in spring time around this area. For full-grown birds, check the Foco craigslist out. I would call these places first before driving over, especially if you are looking for a certain breed of baby chicks.

If you are planning on buying more than 5 or so, you should probably order direct from the hatchery (like McMurrays or Welp, etc). They will deliver the day-old chicks direct to you through the post office, but be sure to pick them up right away.

Blog Connections and Cinzzetti’s

We were contacted by someone who left a comment on this blog. His name is George and he wanted to know what we knew about Puerto Rico because he had some business ideas that he would like to see go to Puerto Rico.  We exchanged emails a few times and decided it would be fun to meet up in person.

So since they live in Colorado Springs and we live here in Greeley, we decided to meet at a halfway point. I thought Cinzzetti’s in Northglenn would be perfect since it is right off I-25. It’s an Italian Buffet restaurant.

With George and Sandy at Cinzzetti’s

We had a lovely meal and time with George and his wife Sandy. They are trying to start a new business sort of like Avon where they sell supplements direct to customers. It sounded interesting and we told him about our connections with Awilda and the naturalists in Puerto Rico.

I don’t think we would probably sell the products ourselves, but you never know. It seems a bit too pricey, and I’m not much for sales. I read a little about glutathione (one of the major ingredients in these products) later on. It is an important nutrient and energy source in our bodies, but I was surprised and happy to see that milk thistle also makes glutathione more abundant in the body. Milk thistle is what we gave our dog Schnoodle when she was really sick and jaundiced with some sort of liver disease as I mentioned before. Milk thistle, unlike some of these supplements, is also dirt cheap and the weed grows all around here.

So anyhow, it was a fun adventure and another example of how our blog connects us to the world around us with people of similar interests. Thanks George and Sandy for the meal and a very nice time. We wish you luck on your journey and hope that our roads will perhaps intersect again in the future.
