Garden Mystery: Solved (somewhat)

I think we have solved the mystery plant puzzle. I believe it is a pumpkin/gourd. Here is a picture. What do you think? We have a few of them springing up everywhere in the greenhouse. It is growing so much that it is pushing the potted plants off the shelves.

Is it a gourd or a pumpkin?

In any case, the greenhouse is so full we cannot even walk in there anymore.

We also have a few things popping up in the garden.

So, this is looking down at the garlic. If you don’t cut the garlic scape as we did earlier in the spring, apparently it creates this bulb on TOP of the plant that looks just like a miniature bulb except it has all these little seed like things coming from it. It’s weird the things you learn in the garden.

And of course, what would a garden post be without a picture of some chickens!

Putting in a Sprinkler System

Britton and my dad worked this whole weekend putting in a sprinkler system at the new rental house. We made a couple of trips to Big R (the farming and sprinkler store in Greeley). One trip they forgot a bunch of things and sent ME by myself back to pick stuff up! I felt like I was speaking a different language…”uh, I need 12 one inch to 1/2 inch poly threaded elbows and five King Drains” or something like that. I think I did pretty well considering.

I didn’t do much of the manual labor compared to them, but I did help fill in trenches and replace the sod that had been dug up.

Later that Saturday evening I left Britton to relax and play video games while I went out with a friend from work to the Rio for dinner and some Margs and then we went to the Kress Theatre downtown where they were playing live jazz music.

Oh and another thing we DUG up this weekend was one of the garlic plants! It is gorgeous (for garlic).

Garlic, Strawberries and Lettuce

The late-May early June harvests here in Greeley mainly consist of garlic, strawberries and lettuce, which is fine with me. We’ve been eating salads and putting the lettuce leaves on sandwiches, using the garlic scapes in all sorts of foods and eating strawberries from the vine. We planted the seeds that have to have warm soil like watermelon, cucumbers, peppers and cantaloupe so we will look forward to their harvest as well. So far everything has been growing great using organic techniques. Here’s a few shots from the yard.

We’ve seen a fox out back in the land behind our house and are a little bit worried for our chickens since they roam freely. So far the fox hasn’t seen them and I hope it stays that way. We also have eagles and hawks all around. I know why some people build chicken runs with chain link covers!
