Red Rocks on the 4th of July

We had always wanted to see a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater on the 4th of July, and so with this vacation we made it happen. Blues Traveler has been playing there on Independence Day for about a decade now and we had always heard great things about it. Our show lived up to the hype even though you could tell they were a little used to playing there and had a lot of the opening bands play with them. Blues Traveler put on a decent show, but the real star of course is the location itself. Nestled between two huge triangular red boulders, Red Rocks is a natural wonder. I am generally not into concerts because they tend to be really expensive and indoor venues just never do justice to the music. But Red Rocks is special even to musicians. You just aren’t a “true” star until you’ve played there and been listed on their museum wall.

The rock formations are out of this world!

We took advantage of our family’s offers of free babysitting to go out to this concert. We were expecting a great show, but what we didn’t expect was a lightning show, rainbows and all the fireworks shows that lit up the whole Denver area. It starting raining in the middle of the show, but it cleared out half the crowd which made the rest of the performance all-the-better. The firework show put on by Bandimere Speedway was the best and it was so interesting to watch the displays from above instead of below. We loved our time at Red Rocks and encourage anyone who loves the outdoors and music to go (hint: pack some snacks and expect some outrageous prices at the concession stands). Here’s a little from our time with our niece and her boyfriend at Red Rocks.

You could see Denver in the distance

And rainbows forming over it

We took the long way to the amphitheater and saw deer on the hike

And a bear (haha)

Such beautiful countryside!

Here’s a little video of our time at Red Rocks:

Rocking Out at the Mayhem Festival

I took my nephew Dawson to his first rock concert the other night.  We went to the Mayhem Festival and saw Slip Knot, Slayer, Anthrax and a whole host of other bands.  It was at the “Comfort Dental Amphitheatre” which is kind of an odd name especially for a hard rock concert.  It used to be called Fiddlers Green, which was a much less corporate sounding experience.  Crazy, but that’s how it goes.

Anthrax Playing the Side Stage

It rained a little bit and since it is an outdoor venue we had brought some ponchos with us that really helped keep us comfortable.

I shall call you Poncho

Rage, Flobots and the DNC in Denver

By Cassie

The DNC is in Denver this week which is pretty historic considering who will be accepting the nomination for president. But also impressive is that Rage Against the Machine and the Flobots are playing here today, I believe. One of my friends, Lorena, won tickets to the show, and another, Rhonda, is going to Invesco when Obama makes his acceptance speech. It’s pretty crazy to see so much attention on Colorado right now.

The Flobots and Rage are not promoting or protesting the Democratic party or anything, actually the way I understand it, they are trying to bring awareness about the government and political process in general, the influence of corporate media on Americans (and govt), and the influence of Americans -and our politics- on the world (for better and for worse).  Here’s a quote from one of the band members:

“Our message here is really trying to gather and rally all of this investment that people are getting now in the whole political process. We have both young people and old really re-energized for the first time and really involved in this process,” Brackett said. “And we want to make sure that energy doesn’t get lost when the president is finally elected.”

Rage is a little heavy of a band for me, but they are super smart and right on target with their lyrics. I love the Flobots hip-hop beat, violins and lyrics, and I believe they are from Colorado. If you’ve never heard Rage or Flobots, here are some Rage lyrics, and a Flobot video:

No Shelter
The main attraction distraction
Got you number than number than numb.
Empty your pockets son they got you thinkin’ that
What you need is what they sellin’
Make you think that buyin’ is rebellin’

From the theaters to malls on every shore
The thin line between entertainment and war
The front line is everywhere there’ll be no shelter here
Still burn the nightmare works you pushin’ for,
I’m a snap of the whip, the true feather to tar
Memory erased and promise gone,
Tradin’ your history for a V.C.R.

Cinema simulated life in trauma
Forthright culture, Americana
Chained to the dream they got you searchin’ for
The thin line between entertainment and war
There’ll be no shelter here,
The front line is everywhere. X4
Hospitals not profitful
The market bulls got pockets full
To advertise some hip disguise
View the world from American eyes
The parmagon keep fiendin’ for more
The thin line between entertainment and war
Fix the need, develop the taste,
Buy the products, or get laid to waste
Coca-cola was back in the veins of Saigon
And Rambo troops We got a dope pair ‘a Nikes on
Godzilla pure motherfuckin’ filler
Get your eyes on the real killer,
Cinema simulated life in trauma
Forthright culture, Americana
Chained to the dream they got you searchin’ for,
The thin line between entertainment and war.
There’ll be no shelter here,
The front line is everywhere. X4
American eyes, American eyes,
View the world from American eyes,

Bury the past, rob us blind,
leave nothing behind. X2
Just stare. X4
Or live the nightmare.

American Eyes, of course, when said aloud is: Americanize.

Here is “Handlebars” which is probably the Flobot’s most famous but they also have other good songs like “There is a War Going On for Your Mind” “Rise” “The Moon” and others.

Daisy Style for the Ween Concert

On the poll, “Daisy Style” won by a landslide. In case you were wondering what some of the “others” were, we had two blanks, and two write-ins: Yourself, and Red to wear my sexy red shoes. I was actually hoping that Daisy would win because we have so many daisies in our backyard right now that I wanted to do something with them.

When I saw that Daisy was probably going to win, I thought about how I could use them. I thought of a daisy chain necklace or possibly pinning them into my hair. Then I decided I was going to wear a flower garland in my hair. Then, I looked in my hair supply drawer and found a headband that would work perfectly.

In case you ever want to try this out, it was extremely easy. I did it on my lunch break yesterday.
1) Gather the daisies, leave about 2 inches of stem. Depending on the look, pick flower sizes accordingly.
2) Lay the daisies out in the order you want them placed.
3) Insert into the headband starting with the middle and working outword.

4) Add water and refrigerate until use.

5) Add a flowery dress, some accessories and Voila! Daisy girl!

Also added some daisy earrings

The concert was pretty fun. I didn’t know very many songs compared to Britton and it was super hot in there. It was basically an old hangar that was converted into a theatre and it felt like there was no air conditioning at all. We were sweating, and my poor daisies only lasted about an hour in there before wilting. When we first got there some girl came up and hugged me when she saw the daisies. (Yes, There were a lot of hippies!) We went out to Buca Di Beppo for dinner and that was pretty fun too. Overall, a great kickoff for my birthday. Thanks everyone for voting!! 🙂
